Because the Riverside Central rosters a unique and eclectic array of locomotives, coming up with a reasonable numbering system was quite the endeavor. I decided to sort the numbers roughly by the age of the locomotive, what kind of locomotive it is, and how much horsepower it has. The end result of this sorting is listed in the table below. Bolded rows indicate locomotives the RC currently rosters.
You'll notice in the Current RC Roster page that I didn't always use -00 and -01 for each locomotive. For one thing, it's nice to have a variety of numbers (especially when decaling). For another, it's important to give off the illusion of a realistic roster of second-hand locomotives. In many cases, these engines didn't always last the longest and were often sold-off or scrapped. I will make a complete listing of these locomotives at some point.
Table Key:
RC #: RC numbering series
BUILDER: locomotive manufacturer
MODEL: type of locomotive
BLDR DATE: era in which locomotive was produced or rebuilt (such as the GP9u or SD26)
HP: horsepower
CLASS: SW - switching, RS - road switcher (used for both switching and road power), RP - road power
GEN: generation of locomotive (1: E-F units, SW to SW1200, and first-gen EMDs; 1.5: GP30s/35s and all U-Boats; 2: all EMDs with 645 prime mover before Dash-2; 2.5: Dash-2 EMDs and GE C-series; 3: Everything after the 50s series EMDs)
